About Us

St. Bonaventure Seminary is a Franciscan Institute of philosophical learning that was founded in the year 1952 at St. Anthony’s Friary, Bangalore by the Dutch Franciscans to educate the Franciscan Students after their novitiate. It had the combined programme of philosophy and theology initially. Between the year 1972 to 1978, the institute progressed as a collaborative unit with the Redemptorists in Bangalore. From the year 1983, onwards the institute began a full-fledged three year programme known as Basic Formation, which focused on the holistic growth of the students towards religious commitment and priesthood. This programme consisted of philosophy, psychology, Franciscan Studies and Liturgy. Students from other congregations such as Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Precious Blood, Third Order Regular, Montfort Fathers, and Camillians were accepted and were integrated into the programme. With a purpose of enhancing the philosophical learning and creating an atmosphere for integral formation and growth, St. Anthony’s Franciscan College from Bangalore was shifted to a more spacious and natural surroundings of Peravoor, Kannur District of Kerala in the year 2016, with a new name as ‘St. Bonaventure Seminary’.

Today St. Bonaventure Seminary caters to the intellectual needs not only of the Franciscan Friars in India but also other religious congregations. With the aim of initiating the students into a genuine intellectual culture through a sound philosophical, psychological and Franciscan formation, St. Bonaventure Seminary presents curriculum apt for our times…
